Colour Friday

I am a huge believer in shopping with small businesses and supporting the little guy so when Holly Tucker announced she was launching her Colour Friday campaign to highlight the importance of shopping with small businesses this Christmas I knew exactly what I wanted to do- make a pinata of course!

It is pretty hard to resist a bargain from the big guys. I don’t know about you but am increasingly worried about the impact of shopping with big stores, you know the ones, where the CEO is a billionaire but the workers get paid less than a living wage. About the environmental impact and human cost of t-shirts that cost £1.50- I used to work in the fashion industry and there is no way you can produce a garment and sell it at that price ethically.

I know it is difficult because we are programmed to consume and search out a bargain. But cheaper isn’t always better. There are hidden costs and consequences we don’t see or think about when we are in the bright lights of the shopping centre. It is especially important this year, when everyone has less to spend, to spend it in the right place. Support those small businesses who are trying to make a difference, to pay a living wage, to think about their impact on the environment. My aim is to spend my money on good quality items that I know are made in a fair and conscious way, that will last.

Over the next few weeks, I am going to share some of the small businesses I want to buy from, this Christmas and beyond, because I love their products and ethos and want them to succeed.
